[WATCH] Mechanism to establish ministers’ salaries commissioned

Prime Minister says recommendations will be up for consideration in the next legislature.

The Auditor General, the Chief Electoral Commissioner and the Ombudsman have been tasked with the formulation of a mechanism establishing the level of salaries of elected officials, including that of the President, prime minister, ministers, parliamentary secretaries and MPs.

In an interview with MaltaToday, Muscat says the government has already reversed the €500 salary increase given after 2008 and has now commissioned the formulation of a mechanism establishing the level of salaries of elected officials.

"We already had our first meeting, during which I made it clear that whatever they recommend will not be implemented in this legislature," Muscat says.

"I don't see a place for these increase right now, but recommendations put forward will be taken into consideration for the coming legislature."

Muscat says this was a step in the right direction, where it is not the Prime Minister who decides when salary increases should be granted.

"The mechanism will be ratified and the public will know about it in the most transparent way possible."
