18 foreign inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility on hunger strike.

Eighteen prisoners at the Corradino Correctional Facility, all foreigners, have gone on hunger strike requesting the government to grant them more than the 100-day amnesty granted by government.

The ministry for home affairs said the prisoners also want fines imposed by the courts to be waived and permission to keep on living in Malta after serving their sentence.

The strike started this morning and the Prisons Director, Emanuel Camilleri, is currently engaged in talks with the prisoners.

A doctor is also monitoring the strikers.

Sources said the foreigners feel they are being "discriminated" against and are requesting to be treated the same as Maltese prisoners when facing trial.

Meanwhile, inewsmalta.com is reporting that the prisoners want the Maltese government to reduce their prison term as per European standards while accept the prisoners' requests who want to serve their term in their respective countries.

I think they should do time in their country and never to return. This is all tax payers money.

These inmates should have thought of their inconveniences before they commited the crime. That is why they are being incarcerated in the first place. Same like the illegal immigrants wanting all the comforts of home after they come here uninvited. Let them strike if they want too. They committed the crime and now they have to do the time.

What else do you require? Don't worry we will entertain all your requests. I think I should go and have a rest in Prison. What are these European standards, stealing or whatever from the host country and then we should have pity on you? I admit that we all make mistakes but making the same mistake over and over again, then its something else.
