Police Commissioner tells Qala council fireworks will no longer be unloaded at Hondoq Bay

Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit has informed Qala mayor Clint Camilleri that fireworks destined for Gozo villages will no longer be unloaded at Hondoq Bay.

This morning, Camilleri appealed for villages making use of fireworks to unload these fireworks in their own locality.

"The Police Commissioner has confirmed  that fireworks will no longer be all unloaded at Hondoq Bay, but other bays or ports will be used," Camilleri said. He also thanked fellow councillors for supporting him over the issue.

Qala council reiterated their concerns, issued some 10 months ago, about the fact that all the fireworks in Gozo feasts are unloaded in Hondoq ir-Rummien, in the proximity of people who frequent the bay.

"I, as Qala mayor, together with the Councillors, will not accept that this situation repeats itself this summer," Camilleri said.

He proposed that fireworks should be unloaded in the port closest to whichever village is going to use them, thus substantially reducing the need to transport fireworks around the island.

He said whenever fireworks are unloaded at Hondoq ir-Rummien, the relevant authorities must let Qala council know, so they will be able to advise residents.

"I will not accept anymore situations where Qala and its people are exposed to this danger," he said.

@ Sonata, you do not have to get personal and somewhat rude, everybody is entitled to their opinion, even if that person is an armchair critic, even you, but use common courtesy. Think before you write. Secondly no town or village should be subjected to any dangerous cargo going through their town or village and yes the Mayor has every right to protect the people. Are fireworks that important as to endanger a whole town's people. What, God forbid if there is a mishap accident caused by these fireworks while being transported to through the town or village. I encourage Mayor Clint and any other Mayor for that matter to put a stop to this madness. No fireworks are worth losing anybody's life.

@Peter Murray For one..Mayor Clint Camilleri is not an armchair critic like you..you sit there and moan and Goan about the world around you.....as days and nights pass on...without doing anything useful to your next of kin...whilst Clint takes all those actions possible at law to protect the safety of his residents at Qala. You should be a man and propose suggestions....well if you small mind carries any......I pity you...WELL DONE CLINT

Thumbs up to the Qala young mayor.a very well done...if other localities want to enjoy fireworks then they should shoulder the responsibility of finding nearest offloading even if this comes at a great expense. Qala residents will no longer tolerate the use of Honda as a landing base for fireworks coming to Gozo. No way..we will stand up to be counted. Well done Clint and all Councillors! safety comes first!
