Alternattiva Demokratika ‘deplores humiliation’ of career diplomats
Alternattiva Demokratika dubs some recent diplomatic appointments “party lackeys”.
Alternattiva Demokratika took umbrage at recent news of new Maltese ambassador, dubbing some of these appointees "simply party lackeys".
AD chairman Arnold Cassola said it was unfortunate that appointees in the diplomatic domain have always been political, "a characteristic of the Maltese two party tribal system".
"Some of these appointees were and are very valid people, others simply party lackeys. The novelty now is that some of these political appointees are substituting career diplomats," Cassola said.
He said, the situation was totally unacceptable.
"The government is not only depriving people who are academically and professionally specialised in this field from their deserved advancement in career, but it is also depriving our country of the best people in this area just to satisfy the ambitions and whims of certain party hacks whose only qualification is their servitude towards their political master of the day."
MaltaToday this week revealed that Labour advisor Marisa Micallef was set to be appointed Malta's ambassador in Washington DC, replacing career diplomat Joseph Cole.
Newsbook, the Church's online organ, has also reported that well-known TV host and one of Malta's top travel agents Norman Hamilton is set to be appointed High Commissioner to the UK while Ray Azzopardi is expected to become ambassador to Belgium.
