Busuttil’s suspicions on agreement with government ‘unfounded’ - John Dalli
PN leader Simon Busuttil’s suspicions on agreement between John Dalli and Labour government are unfounded, former PN minister says.
Former PN minister and European Commissioner John Dalli has denied the allegation that there was an agreement in place with the Labour government preceding his appointment to pilot a health reform.
In comments to MaltaToday, Dalli said that PN leader Simon Busuttil's claims that there was an agreement in place with the government prior to the Police Commissioner Peter Paul Zammit's statement that there was no case against him in connection to the allegations brought against him by the EU's anti-fraud office, OLAF, were "unfounded."
Following the Commissioner's statement, the former European Commissioner had said he was willing to help whoever sought his help in Malta, whether it was the Nationalist Party's new leadership or the new government.
Yesterday, PN leader Simon Busuttil said that the government's decision to appoint Dalli to head the Mater Dei Hospital reform smacked of political opportunism.
Busuttil denied that the Prime Minister was faster than the PN in seeking Dalli's assistance following the former European Commissioner's offer to help both the PN and the government.
The PN leader claimed that the day after the police commissioner had announced there was no criminal case against Dalli, the party's secretary-general Chris Said called Dalli.
However, in comments to MaltaToday, Dalli pointed out that he only met the Prime Minister one week after the Police Commissioner's statement.
"My meeting with the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, on the initiative of health minister Godfrey Farrugia, happened a week later, and not the day after as Busuttil claimed. Therefore, Busuttil's suspicions are unfounded."
Moreover, he clarified that Chris Said did not call in his capacity as PN secretary-general.
"Chris Said called me on a personal basis to express his satisfaction over the Police Commissioner's statement in which he said their was no criminal case against me, as hundreds of other Maltese and foreign persons did," Dalli said.
