Montebello’s resignation ‘proof of bad choices’ –PN
Opposition demands ‘real reason’ behind resignation.
The resignation of permanent secretary for sustainable development, the environment and climate change, Brian Montebello, indicates that Labour's choices of permanent secretaries have been bad ones, according to the Nationalist Party.
The Opposition made reference to the fact that when elected, the Labour government removed a number of permanent secretaries and "replaced them with people close to the party."
The Nationalist Party demanded to know the "real reason" behind the resignation.
PN also asked whether it was true that Minister Leo Brincat and ministerial officials were frustrated with Montebello's work, and whether there were other ministers who were disappointed by the work being done by their permanent secretaries.
"This also confirms that the government has not been appointing people on the basis of meritocracy," according to the PN.
Montebello announced his resignation yesterday. Attempts to contact the environment ministry have so far been futile; however, according to government sources, Montebello tendered his resignation for personal reasons.
Montebello was one of the 11 new permanent secretaries appointed by the new Labour government upon its election.
