Cats under the care of the animal welfare department which were being kept in small cages, some as small as rabbit cages, have now been transferred to a cat sanctuary in Ghammieri.

The sanctuary was inaugurated this evening by parliamentary secretary for animal rights Roderick Galdes.

A total of 150 cats were transferred to the new place, giving the furry animals shelters and an open space. Galdes said the material used for the shelters was adequate for both summer and winter weather. Animal rights NGO Happy Paws also helped out in repairing, at no cost, some of the shelters.

The junior minister also urged the public not to abandon their pets and said anyone caught doing so could face fines or penalties.

On behalf of the Happy Paws Animal Clinic, the not-for-profit charity in Marsa, we would like to clarify that Happy Paws did "not repair, at no cost, the shelters" in respect of the article when Minister Roderick Galdes Cats opened the new cat sanctuary in Ghammieri. These cats had been under the care of the Animal Welfare department which were being kept in small cages, some as small as rabbit cages. Happy Paws, in collaboration with Dogs Trust, Malta neutered all their dogs, and the last 3 weeks Happy Paws blood tested and neutered all their cats. Happy Paws Charity Organization, founded in 2004, serves the STRAY animal community in Malta and to the people (feeders) who care for them, by providing Free neutering for those caretakers who have become members of Happy Paws. Happy Paws also run a successful stray dog adoption scheme. Apart from our resident Veterinary Staff, it is completely run by volunteers. The charity finance the organization by operating 3 charity shops, through sponsorships, donations, our Rainbow wall and fund-raising events. Happy Paws is the only spay and neuter clinic of its kind in Malta and they believe the only way to control stray dog and cat overpopulation and the killing of adoptable animals is by decreasing birth rates. Happy Paws is a registered and recognised non-profit NGO (VO 0119)
