97 smoking-related deaths between January and February

Total of 439 death caused by smoking during 2012.

Smoking was the cause of death of 536 individuals in 14 months, Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia revealed in parliament this evening.

The minister was replying to a question raised by PN MP Jason Azzopardi.

Farrugia said the amount of deaths registered in the national death register and considered to have been caused by smoking during 2012 amounted to 439 cases.

The cases include deaths in both Malta and Gozo.

Between January and February of this year, the provisionary number of cases amounted to 97 deaths.

Data for the months of March and April was still being collected.
