Opposition to support Whistleblowers' Act tabled by government
PN’s parliamentary group agrees to support Whistleblowers’ Act as presented by the Labour government.
The parliamentary group of the Nationalist Party has agreed to support the Whistleblowers' Act as presented by the Labour government, noting that it was "almost identical" to that presented by the Nationalist government in the last legislature.
The Whistleblowers' Act had been in the pipeline for years, where at one point the previous administration had also discussed the possibility of it being enacted by end of 2010.
"The PN is in favour of any initiative that strengthens the institutions in the fight against corruption and therefore the PN will be supporting the Whistleblowers' Act," the PN said in a statement.
The party said the law followed a series of laws introduced by the Nationalist government to improve good governance and combat corruption. These include the Ombudsman, the Office of the Auditor General, the Permanent Commission against Corruption, the setting up of the Public Accounts Committee, the Tribunal for the Administrative Revision, Freedom of Information Act and the Money Laundering Act.
"We will continue to give our full support to all initiatives that strengthen Malta's fight against corruption. In parliament, we will give our contribution and also put forward proposals to have an effective law," the PN said.
