Foreign minister concerned over escalation of violence across Egypt
Government calls on Egypt to ‘engage in dialogue’ to ensure a return to democratic process and constitutional order.
All parties in Egypt must exercise due restraint and engage in dialogue to ensure a return to the democratic process and constitutional order, the Maltese government said today.
In a statement issued by the foreign affairs minister, Minister George Vella said Malta wad deeply concerned over the recent developments in Egypt.
International media has reported that escalation of violence across Egypt has already left 30 dead.
"Violence is never a solution to any problems," the minister said while offering its condolences to the families who lost relatives as a result of the violence.
"At this delicate moment in Egypt's transition to democracy, the rule of law and national stability, Malta calls on all parties in Egypt to exercise due restraint and to engage in a dialogue in the interest of ensuring a return to the democratic process and constitutional order."
The minister said it was essential the transition process resumed at the earliest possible and is completed to ensure that the democratic ideals and aspirations which inspired and motivated the 25 January Revolution in 2011 prevails.
"This process needs to be as inclusive as possible since it is ultimately the Egyptian people themselves who will determine their country's future."
