Updated | As PL dubs Busuttil 'hypocrite', PN says government challenging ECHR
Simon Busuttil wrote article in 2010 defending Italy’s pushback policy, Labour says; PN retaliates: Joseph Muscat is challenging the European Court of Human Rights.
The Labour party has called Opposition leader Simon Busuttil a "hypocrite" for criticising the government statement last week that it will use pushbacks as a means of handling illegal immigration if the EU did not offer help.
PL made reference to an article written by Busuttil in 2010, where he had defended the Italian government's decision to use a pushback policy regarding illegal immigration.
"This hypocrisy shows how Busuttil and the Nationalist party care only about hindering the government in its work to send a message that Malta will not accept being left to deal with this situation alone," PL said.
It added that this showed Busuttil could not be taken seriously and that PN has learnt nothing from the failures of its previous administration.
In a reaction, the Nationalist Party accused Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister, of challenging the European Court of Human Rights with his persistence not to rule out pushbacks.
"Even though the court held that pushbacks are illegal and in breach of human rights, yet the Prime Minister does not rule out pushbacks," the PN said.
