9,278 transfers over 14 years

Total of 1,008 transfers carried out in 2003.

According to information tabled in parliament by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, the total amount of transfers between 1993 and 2012 amounted to 9,278.

The largest amount of transfers in the civil service, 1,008, occurred in 2003.

Since the March elections, transfers in civil service repeatedly made political headlines with the Nationalist opposition accusing government of "vindictive transfers". On its part, the Labour government defended these transfers insisting that the "majority" had been requested by the workers themselves.

Muscat presented parliament with the list of transfers that took place between 1998 and last year. The public officers were transferred between the various departments.

The least number of transfers took place last year, with 229.
