‘Muscat abstaining on migration issues to appease colleagues?’ – Cassola
“Will Malta continue to accept EU money for migration issues?”
Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson Arnold Cassola has questioned Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's motives for abstaining on EU measures on migration issues rather than voting against them.
"Is this so as not to displease his 10 Prime Minister colleagues from the Party of European Socialists?" Cassola said, adding that Muscat had actually told EASO officials that "we will not refuse our support on EU measures, but we will abstain on them".
While saying EU countries must be persuaded to consent to responsibility sharing, and to review the Dublin convention, AD said until this happens, Muscat must "put his actions where his mouth is".
Cassola said in 2012, the EU gave Malta €18 million for migration-related issues. This money was used to buy boats, aircraft and other equipment for the Maltese military.
"Will Malta continue to accept this money from the EU?" he asked.
This criticism comes after Muscat said last week he demanded concrete EU assistance on migration and asylum, and confirmed the government did not exclude a pushback policy if it was "necessary to safeguard Maltese interests".
