‘PM’s illegal, heartless proposals’ on migration out of synch with Maltese beliefs - AD
Ahead of European Council president’s visit to Malta, Alternattiva Demokratika urges the EU to adopt solidarity concept in practice.
The majority of the people of Malta had "a great heart" and the president of the European Council should not measure their solidarity on the basis of their Prime Minister's "illegal and heartless proposals", Alternattiva Demokratika said today.
Council President Herman Van Rompuy will be on a short visit to Malta during which he'll hold a working lunch with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat before addressing parliament in the afternoon.
Among the topics on the agenda, migration and the recent developments will be discussed.
AD took the opportunity to call on Van Rompuy to be "persuasive" with EU member states and the Libyan government in ensuring that Malta does not face irregular migration alone.
Chairperson Arnold Cassola said Van Rompuy should not measure "the traditional generosity of the Maltese people on the basis of the illegal and heartless proposals of their Prime Minister".
"The majority of the Maltese have a great heart," Cassola said.
He however added it was "an urgent and prime duty of Herman van Rompuy to persuade the European Council of Ministers to adopt the concept of solidarity in practice, responsibility sharing and to revise the Dublin convention".
Cassola also said the EU should persuade the Libyan authorities to ratify the Geneva Convention.
