Commission to revise Church-State agreement holds its first meeting
First meeting described as ‘cordial’ and ‘collaborative’ - ‘positive and substantial’ progress registered.
The first meeting of the joint commission set up to discuss the 1993 Church-State agreement concerning marriage was held at Palazzo Parisio, hosted by Foreign Affairs minister George Vella.
Representatives of the government and the Holy See held their first talks, set to lead to the revision of the agreement which envisages a partial concession to the Ecclesiastical Tribunal over the local civil courts when it comes to the annulment of Catholic marriages.
The meeting was described as "cordial" and "highly collaborative". The ministry for foreign affairs said both sides expressed satisfaction at the "positive and substantial" progress that was registered.
Representing government were also parliamentary secretary for justice Owen Bonnici and Attorney General, Peter Grech. The Holy See was represented by Auxiliary Bishop Mgr Charles Scicluna and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech.
Further meetings will be held in the coming weeks.
