Racist attack on two Arriva drivers
Two Arriva drivers victim of racist aggression, police intervention required.
An Arriva driver was the victim of a racist attack yesterday evening when the bus he was driving came to a stop because of another car which was blocking the road.
Public transport service provider Arriva Malta said the incident occurred in the area of Mgarr. A number of people, Arriva said, started insulting and shouting personal abuse at the driver.
When some minutes later a second driver arrived on site, he was also affronted with racist insults which progressed to physical assault.
The incident necessitated police intervention.
Kim Purcell, Arriva's Operations Director, said that Arriva would like to point out that drivers are hard workers who often work in difficult situations.
"Arriva is unequivocally stating that all aggressions will be reported to the Police and drivers will receive full assistance in any eventual court proceedings," Purcell said.
"All our buses are fitted with CCTV cameras which will be used as evidence. The Company will not tolerate any type of violence, especially racism."
