Operational costs make up 75% of sports council’s budget

Operational expenses at Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport are eating away 75% of its allocated budget, parliamentary secretary for youth and sport says.

Operational expenses make up two-thirds of the total budget allocated to the Kunsill Malti ghall-Isport (KMS), parliamentary secretary for research, innovation, youth and sport 

Stefan Buontempo said.

He explained that 75% of the KMS budget is being spent on the operations & managment, while only a mere 17% is being invested in sport organisations.

"Such a situation is totally unacceptable," Bountempo said during a press conference where financial assistance was distributed to various sport organisations.

While congratulating sport organisations for succeeding in benefiting under various schemes, Buontempo claimed that to manage the KMS, the highest authority of sport in the country, the country was forking out a substantial amount of money.

"This situation is precluding further investment in various sport organisations, that are doing an impeccable job for the sake of sport and the community, and these organisations are not only contributing to our economy but they are enabling those involved to be physically fit, 

Buontempo said.

He added that the government believes in the role sports organisations and it is committed in providing the right tools that would make them stronger.

Buontempo also encouraged more people to participate in sport activities to lead a healthier life.
