Home Affairs minister Manuel Mallia met European Commissioner home affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmström today at informal Justice and Home Affairs council meeting in Lithuania, to discuss developments in Malta on irregular immigration and asylum.

The ministry said Mallia spoke of the need for solidarity and fair sharing of responsibility among the member states, adding that the Commission would provide concrete assistance on the return of failed asylum-seekers to their countries of origin.

Failed asylum seekers are claimants whose application for protection was refused on appeal and are then issued with a removal order.

"The Commission will assist the Maltese government in taking additional measures to repatriate migrants who are illegally present in Malta at the earliest, taking advantage of the assistance that can be provided by the Commission to overcome the practical difficulties that have been encountered so far and to expedite the return of those migrants who have no authorisation to remain in Malta," the ministry said.

The ministry will be preparing actions to achieve this aim together with the Commission.

Mallia said that it was necessary to implement the principle of solidarity and fair responsibility sharing that is already enshrined in the Treaty, to render the numbers more manageable in Malta's context, and called on the Commissioner to extend her assistance.

"Commissioner Malmström said she understood the situation and the particular pressure that Malta was facing and stood ready to help Malta in any way she could. To begin with, the Commission will be making emergency funding available to Malta," the ministry said.

"Commissioner Malmström also gave her assurance that she will continue to push for the relocation of beneficiaries of international protection from Malta, noting that the Annual Relocation Forum that was recently announced will be organised by the Commission after the summer."

Furthermore, repatriating those who do not qualify for Asylum or Protection status is not enough because the rate of those who fail to achieve one of these status is relatively small and less then 10%. If 2000 immigrant arrive in Malta, more then 1800 will achieve the asylum or protection status, because those who successfully achieve the asylum or protection status in Malta percentage is 90%.

Commissioner Malmstrom needs to understand, that although financial help is necessary to maintain these illegal immigrants, it is not the most important issue to solve the problem. The most important and the most needed help we need, is the relocation of these immigrants, because we do not have enough space to accommodate them due to the limited space we have on this island. The issue is not about racism because we helped in every way we can, but to keep all those who arrive by boats on this island, is impossible. We are the most populated country in the EU with a population density of 1333 persons per sq.km.

THis is all a lot of hot air by Malmstrom. Feranco Frattini had said that he wanted Malta and Cyprus to be turned into illegal immigranst open centres. The vast majority of Maltese citizens shall only be satisfied if all the illegal immigrants are either repatriated or allowed to proceed to mainland Europe. No half-measures. Just take them all out of Malta.

At least we can send back the failed asylum seekers to their country.

"Push for relocation","repatriation","pushback"etc. They all mean more or less the same thing i.e. sending back illegals who already have a comfortable country. The pro-immigration people in Malta must be having some bowel trouble after this serious agreement that proved them to be ridiculous. That's why one must not rush and condemn, my dear silly friends!

"To begin with, the Commission will be making emergency funding available to Malta," the ministry said." There it is the EU answer to everything. They fit the program that with money you can buy just about everything. What is the EU going to do about the influx of illegal immigrants that are invading our little island? We send some of them back to their original country. Isn't that being a racist in itself? Only the Maltese are racists for trying to protect their livelihoods. Is that it, Commissioner Malmström? These promises have been going on ever since this illegal immigrant business started and we see no change in sight.

How many illegal migrants are there in Malta that will be sent back to their countries of origin
