In an interview with Sunday newspaper Illum, Education minister Evarist Bartolo revealed plans to hold a "referendum" on school uniforms.

The referendum would ask whether parents were in favour of uniforms, whether they wanted to change them or whether they wanted simpler uniforms.

Bartolo argues that the education system did not depend on what children wear and several schools abroad did not have uniforms.

His personal opinion is that uniforms should be simplified. But if removed, guidelines would be issued on what students should wear.

Personally I would go for simpler uniforms using more natural materials best suited for our climatic conditions. I am afraid that removal of school uniforms would lead to more financial problems for the parents.

Standard uniform in all schools to stop all commissions and only one supplier. Only the badge may be different. Otherwise white shirt, one tie for the boys, and one colour trousers for the boys and skirt for the girls. The badge may be bought from the school or from anyone, but the shirts, trousers and skirt may be bought from anywhere.

The problem is that once given a contract suppliers have a monopoly. They often provide parents with poor quality items for exorbitant prices.
