Passenger with meningitis, 'risk to passengers onboard minimal'
Air Malta takes precautionary measures after passenger reports unwell.
A passenger reported feeling unwell on board today's Air Malta flight KM612 from Malta to Rome Fiumicino was found to be suffering from meningitis.
As a result, Air Malta took the required precautionary measures in line with its procedures for incidents of this nature. The aircraft involved has been temporarily grounded in Malta and is being thoroughly disinfected before re-entering service.
Following consultation with Dr Charmaine Gauci, the Director of the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate of Malta, it is clear that any risk to passengers onboard is minimal due to the limited time of exposure.
"This information is based on scientific advice, is evidence-based and forms part of standard operating procedures in Malta," Air Malta said in a statement.
"Air Malta's policy is to safeguard at all times the health and safety of its passengers and crews. This event reaffirms our commitment in this regard."
Air Malta's services on flights KM1308/1309 to and from Malta to Munich via Catania and KM 696/697 to and from Tripoli will be delayed for one hour as a result of the precautionary measures taken.
