Armed Forces rescues 112 migrants

In an operation spread over 15 hours, the AFM rescue 112 migrants found drifting at sea.

Early yesterday morning an AFM aircraft on a routine patrol sighted a rubber dinghy some 34 nautical miles South of Malta with approximately 112 persons on board. The Operations Centre in Luqa diverted Inshore Patrol Vessel P21 and Offshore Patrol Vessel P52 to investigate further.

The migrant vessel was found in distress and drifting. Subsequently the migrants were transferred onto the P52 arriving at the Maritime Squadron Base in hay Wharf late in the night.

During the rescue operation 8 migrants requiring urgent medical evacuation were transferred on the P21 and rushed to the ambulances waiting at the Maritime Squadron Base.

In total the group was made up of 112 persons, of whom 88 males, 20 females and 4 infants. One of the females was pregnant.

Last night's arrival brings the total number of migrants arriving this year to 880.

Another headache for Malta while the rest of the Union watches.Malta should put it's foot down and implement a pushback policy until the EU agrees in writing in it's constitution that the illegal immigrants arriving in Malta are Europe's problem and solution. That is the EU will shoulder to take them as per quota to their population.Scrap the Dublin accord, that's a noose to Malta's economy and security. Also work must be done to deal with Libya, the port of departure of these poor people and Libya should be held liable for it's lack of responsibilty to man their ports.
