Chris Mangion was in Paola last week on invitation of Imam Mohammed el Saadi, to witness the Muslim community breaking the day's fast as part of Ramadan, which occurs in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations. Food and drink is served daily, before sunrise and after sunset. Fasting also includes the increased offering of prayers and recitation of the Quran.

Fasting remains obligatory for adult Muslims, except those who are ill, travelling, pregnant, diabetic or going through menstrual bleeding.
