Labour councilor Carmel Hili has resigned his seat on the St Paul's Bay local council following "discord" between him and mayor Mario Salerno.

Although Hili refused to elaborate on the reasons which led to his resignation, he did confirm it was related to disagreements he had with Salerno.

Hili did not exclude revealing the reasons for his resignation in the future.

Contacted by MaltaToday, the St Paul's Bay mayor however denied any conflicts existed between Hili and him.

"Carmel Hili resigned for personal reasons... we have a good relationship," he said.

The electoral commission said only one nomination, by Oliver Mallia, was submitted today to fill in the vacant seat. The casual election will take place on Monday 5 August at Evans Building.
