Floriana council to fight removal of parking scheme

The Floriana local council will not let go of the residential parking scheme so easily as it has pledged to "fight with all means the populist attempt" to have the scheme suspended or removed.

The local council said it fought for years to have the scheme introduced, including countless meetings with Transport Malta where unions representing workers and business were also involved.

"Our goal was not only to create a balance between Floriana residents and those who visit the locality but also to encourage commuters to use alternative transport," the council said.

The use of public transport, it explained, helped to reduce the pollution caused by the thousands of cars which everyday pass through Floriana.

The council also expressed its willingness to discuss amendments to the scheme.

The Floriana local council like all other local councils has grown too big for its shoes. They are simply local councils subordinate to the Central Government. Your system is illegal and you had been warned before you introduced it that it was against the Constitution and yet you forged ahead to ROB drivers of their money. You should be ASHAMED and should know that when you rob people you are called a ROBBER. You shall have to obey and remove the discriminatory residents parking scheme whether you like it or not. I only and sincerely hope that those who were fined would start a class action personally against the mayor and counselors to get back their fines and that the mayor and local counselors are sued for breach of citizens constitutional rights and condemned and fined heavily for their arrogance and anti-constitutionality.

I fully agree with Xifajk, we all pay our licences and are supposed to be all alike . so please do away with all parking schemes. I live in sliema and with patience i hardly find any problem in parking .

First of ALLL the Floriana Local Council should fight for s decent timely Public Transport. Secondly they should fight against discriminatory Laws such as this one. We all pay the same taxes and Licences to use our own cars, so why certain Local councils are allowed to have a resident's parking while other are not? I live in Sliema and one can come and park at any time, so why I am deprived of going to Floriana and have to go and pay either the private car par or as the council itself said have to use the unbearable public transport. Don't you think that what good for the goose is good for the gander Members of the floriana Local council. The same applies for Valletta and Hamrun. Are those who haven't got a residence parking in their locality, children of the lesser goods? Justice must prevail and Discrimination stopped once and for all.
