PN criticises Government's lack of responsibility in safeguarding trees
Opposition declares it is ready to cooperate not only to safeguard existing trees but also to increase them.
The Opposition has criticized the Government on how it is tackling the safeguarding of trees, saying this responsibility is fragmented and divided under various ministries.
“Despite organizing public consultation on the same subject, the government is not pro-active and is only reacting after damage is done,” PN’s environment spokesperson, Charlo Bonnici said.
In a press statement, Bonnici asked whether the consultative committee tasked with drafting a legislative framework to protect trees was set up and whether any reports or action plans were proposed. He also asked whether the government took any action on the excessive pruning of trees that happened recently.
The opposition called on the government to give clear answers, while saying the Nationalist opposition is ready to cooperate not only to safeguard existing trees but also to increase them.
Last week, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said the legislative framework to protect trees would be concluded in the coming days.
