Hunting seasons the best deterrent to illegal shootings, FKNK says

FKNK claims the presence of genuine hunters in Malta’s countryside is having a positive impact.

Hunting federation FKNK lauded its members after no illegal shooting was reported in the initial days of autumn’s hunting season.

“The first two days of September produced a good influx of migrating protected bird species, from raptors to herons and others. Not a single incident of illegal shooting of protected bird species has been reported with the opening of the hunting season. The FKNK applauds the efforts of its members in attaining this scenario,” it said in a statement.

FKNK argued that having legal hunting seasons is the best deterrent against illegal shooting of protected bird species. It claimed that the presence of genuine hunters in Malta’s countryside is having a positive impact.

The hunting federation warned its members once again that any illegalities will not be tolerated.

This is the only way forward for hunting to regain the accepted social status it enjoyed not so long ago,” FKNK said.

There could be the possibility that legal hunters might deter illegal ones and I hope so too but we who enjoy a walk in the countryside cannot do so without the risk of either being showered with pallets or getting into some argument. All of us are limited to sunday after 1pm to avoid this.

Qormi valley this morning was full of hunters and I heard more than one with illegal repeaters shooting way over three shots in succession. Once they're out there, all the laws fly out of the window. Hunters have proved, over and over that they simply can't be trusted to follow the laws.

You can't argue with that. In much the same way as the abolition of speed limits would be effective in reducing the number of cars breaking the speed limit. A number of other examples present themselves, but we better not go there......
