Man dies as he falls off cliff and plunges into sea at Wied iz-Zurrieq

A man has died shortly after being admitted to hospital in a critical condition, after accidentally falling off a cliff and plunging into the sea as he was taking pictures of some friends.

The accident happened when the man, Mario Agius, - a 57 year old photographer from Sliema with a studio in Qormi, apparently took a false step backwards without noticing that he was quite close to the edge. The man was apparently taking photographs of a wedding couple.

Witnesses said that the earth gave way beneath the man's feet, with the consequence that he plunged metres below into the sea.

He was rescued by a group of people who happened to be in the area, and was later rushed to hospital where he was found to be in a critical condition and died a few hours later.

Police rushed to the scene and inititated investigations, while a duty magistrate ordered an inquiry.
