Government stops Sliema Mayor from calling 'urgent meeting'

Government has reportedly stopped an 'urgent meeting' summoned by Sliema Mayor Nikki Dimech, after being advised that the summons for the Council meeting was 'illegal'.

Council sources have told MaltaToday that PN Mayor Nikki Dimech recieved orders from the Department of Local Councils that the meeting he summoned at 4.30pm this afternoon was 'illegal' as it was short of conforming with the regulations that govern council meetings.

MaltaToday is informed that Mayor Nikki Dimech issued a summons to all Coucillors to be present today at 4.30 pm to discuss the 'position' of the Council's Executive Secretary and the clarification of works orders procedure within the Council.

The agenda is reminiscent of an ongoing investigation by government auditors who are looking into allegations of malpractice within the council.

It is understood that today's meeting was intended to put pressure on the executive secretary, who turns out to be the person who reported the alleged malpractices to the authorities.

MaltaToday is informed that Nikki Dimech has been informed by government that today's meeting cannot be held, as the law obliges all meetings to be held after 5.30pm, and should any meeting be held earlier than that, then a unanimous decision must be taken by all councillors present during a previous meeting.
