Furniture damaged when a protest broke out at the Safi detention centre at around 3:20am.
A detention service officer was slighly injured when migrants at the Safi detention centre damaged a fence and broke furniture during a protest which broke out in the early hours of the morning.
It is not clear what instigated the protest, but inewsmalta.com reports it could be tied to the refugee status to be granted to a number of Eritreans. The same newspaper reports 29 migrants were involved in the commotion.
The migrants also tried to demolish a perimeter fence but were stopped by members of the Detention Services before they could escape. According to a government statement, a small group of irregular immigrants dislodged a number of stone slabs from a wall of their accommodation block.
"This activity was noted by an alert detention service officer who immediately raised the alarm and called for the assistance of his colleagues. The group of immigrants responded by throwing back broken stones, hot water and other objects at their disposal," the government said.
Members of the Armed Forces of Malta and the Police Corps were called in to assist the detention services officers.
