Calleja concert postponed due to gale force warning

A gale force warning forecast for today has led to the unfortunate postponement of the much awaited concert by Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja. The concert was to be held on the granaries in Floriana together with Italian star Riccardo Cocciante and American Dionne Warwick.

It is not known whether the concert will be held on another date, however MaltaToday is informed that discussions are underway in a bid to hold the concert on another day, possibly tomorrow or Monday, and perhaps in a different location.

NNG Promotions, organisers of the 2010 Joseph Calleja Summer Concert, said in a statement that it will continue to issue regular media updates to ensure that ticket holders receive the latest up-to-date information.

While apologising for the inconvenience, NNG Promotions have asked all guests in possession of concert tickets to follow the media for more information.

"These precautions are being taken to ensure that the thousands of guests attending the event will get to enjoy the best possible experience and performance from all the artists and orchestra," a statement said.

The cancellation brings to light the difficulties of open air theatres and open air concerts. Joseph Calleja was the first to sign a national artists petition against the building of an open-air theatre in Valletta.

Something is very wrong somewhere at the top. Why is the Government so anxious to accept the White Rocks deal and yet not even considering the Opera House deal from Architect Giovanni Trevisan? This architect has stated that he can obtain the funds to build a proper 1200 seat opera house at no cost whatsoever to the Maltese Government yet his offer is being ignored. Two concert cancellations within a week in the height of summer is a brilliant advert for a roofless theatre! I challenge someone from the Government to justify to the public the logic of a roofless theatre in the light of these cancellations.

It is a known fact that Calleja is against roofless theaters. But what's the alternative to accommodate the "thousands" who were booked for the Floriana concert? And how about the Verona Arena? Should this be turned into an open market because it is roofless?? Let's be practical please.

I admire the organisers for postponing the concert. I have been to other concerts in various places in Malta when there was a strong wind and the sound was a disaster because wind creates a lot of background noise on the microphone.

I think the organiser have been a bit over optomistic here, |I cannot bleieve there will be gale force winds tomorrow evening

What about the people who bought tickets and will not be able to make it on the reset date ? Will they get a refund ?
