‘No time for bullying cases’, police officer tells mother

A mother who sought help at the police station after her son was reportedly bullied was faced with a ‘we have no time for this’ reply.

A mother who reported a case of bullying to the police got the shock of her life when the police officer replied with a "we do not have time for such cases".

According to Sunday newspaper Illum, the woman's son was being bullied by a group of 16-year-olds attending his same school. The bullying started in June and continued throughout the summer holidays.

The boy had also been allegedly kicked in the head and his genital parts at the Sliema front.

When the mother took her son to the police station to report the attack, a police officer reportedly told her "for us this is a waste of time. They are still children and we don't have time for these things".

The case eventually ended up before the Juvenile Court in Santa Venera. The mother complained she hadn't been allowed to testify. The bullies have now been ordered to stay away from the victim.

A case like this one in the civilized western world that our politicians from both parties boast that we make a part of (my ass)heads will roll start from the police that took the report up to the minister responsible to the police, and the media play a very important role here you the media have to expose what is going and yes inform the general public with issues like this, one the poor mother must be devastated with what happened to her child and two with the poor answer she was told by this hopeless cop but then again I have forgot that the media in Malta is there to cover up for the misgivings of the parties they represent independent or not.

Very typical of the police in Malta. They always have an excuse ready for doing nothing.

when the abuse started at school even the headmaster was told about what was happening and he took no action at all. we spoke to him for more than once to take action but we found no help at all. this is the anti bullying that we all talk about. when you are in it, you will find that no one helps you out, no teachers no headmaster, no police and no judge. the judge said DAN KOLLU HELA TA HIN GHALINA. now tell me what will be left to do

If the police have no time for petty crimes, does it mean that we have to take the law into our own hands to deal with similar problems?

"for us this is a waste of time. They are still children and we don't have time for these things". Now that is a typical answer from a Maltese policeman. The least thing he could have done is make a report and maybe investigate. If the police do not have time for this sort of thing then they should make time. And then one wonders why most people do not have much faith in the police. This one policeman should be investigated and have the facts of life explained to him.

The other name for bullies, is COWARDS.

If this bullying was taking place at school, the mother should have reported this bullying to the school in the first place, who hence would have been duty bound to report to the anti-bullying section of the eduction. If on the other hand the bullying took place outside school, the mother should have taken her son to a doctor to issue a medical report and then make a report at the police station. With a medical report, the police could not refuse to take action.

The police in Malta have too many areas in which they don't want to "bother". Remember the two girls kissing in the street who were beaten up by two brothers in Pieta? The police "talked" to the brothers... but nothing was done, no arrests were made, even though one girl's nose was broken and the other had bruises all over her body. It took a Malta Today article on the front page before the police - 4 days after the incident - finally charged the boys with assault. It is time the new government made the police understand that they are public SERVANTS... and not entitled thugs who can decide who and when to protect people according to their whims.

if this true, there are no words to describe this disgusting behaviour by the police. Bullying is the worst form of intimidation; it can scar a person for life, denying him his self-respect. I hope the commisioner doesn't take this lightly. And you at Malta Today, would be doing your job if you follow up on this issue.

Bullies ordered to stay away from the victim. How about suspending them from school and if it is serious bullying kick them out of school permanently? That will ruin their future but who cares?
