The Maltese delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York has continued with its numerous bilateral meetings "to strengthen Malta's relationship with the countries in the Mediterranean region".

The latest two meetings were with Tunisian President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki and Lebanon's President Michel Sleiman, during which Prime Minister Joseph Muscat reiterated the government's commitment for better relations with Arab countries.

Muscat told the Tunisian President it was important for the Maltese and Tunisian commercial communities to enjoy "an open communication" which would result in the creation of more jobs. For this aim, he proposed for Malta Enterprise to enter into frequent contact with its Tunisian counterpart.

Muscat also called for stability in North African countries, which was important for the region's prosperity.

On his part, the Tunisian President briefed Muscat on the political developments of his country.

In a separate meeting with the President of Lebanon, Michel Sleiman said he saw potential for commercial ties between the two countries.

Muscat expressed his concern over the Syrian conflict and reiterated Malta's position in favour of a diplomatic solution.

He also urged Sleiman to provide access to humanitarian access for Syria.
