The prolonged political instability in Libya has meant Malta remained without a Libyan ambassador for more than 18months. The successor to Dr Saadun Suayeh is still to be named after Suayeh left Malta in February 2012, citing health reasons.

In the initial days of the Arab Revolution, Suayeh had declared that Gaddafi was the only solution to stop the bloodshed and afterwards refused to lower Gaddafi’s flag in favour of the revolution flag. However, in an interview with MaltaToday after the revolution, Suayeh said he served as a double-agent, passing sensitive, important documents and information to the Maltese Government.

In comments with Sunday Newspaper ‘Illum’, a spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry said it was true that no Libyan Ambassador was yet appointed, but this had no negative effect on bilateral relations.
