Complete change of the guard

Armed Forces of Malta to have ‘brand new’ leadership.

The leadership of the Armed Forces of Malta will be completely new following the resignation of both AFM commander Brigadier Martin Xuereb and deputy commander Colonel David Attard.

While Xuereb tendered his resignation last week, Attard handed in his resignation in July, weeks after becoming commandant of the Safi Detention Centre.

Announced in the Government Gazette, Attard's resignation became effective today while Xuereb will officially leave the AFM on 14 November.

According to government, Attard left after 25 years of service.

However, informed sources had told MaltaToday that Attard was unhappy with government's decision to transfer him to the Safi Detention Centre, where he replaced Lt Col Brian Gatt who went to head other detention centres.

Brigadier Martin Xuereb tendered his resignation as commander of the Armed Forces of Malta, to take up a position in Brussels on defence-related matters.

As Malta's military capacity is in the zero-minus category anyway, this is all purely academic and a sheer waste of time and money. ALBERT FENECH
