"I will not sign unless Malta benefits" - Opposition Leader
Opposition leader Simon Busuttil pledges a strong and constructive opposition, stating he will not sign the Enemalta gas agreement unless convinced that Malta will benefit.
The Enemalta gas power agreement does not make sense as the government will commit to buy energy from a private company for 18 years, but the prices is fixed only for the first five years, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said this morning in Swieqi.
"Unlike Konrad Mizzi, I would not sign such a contract on your behalf", Dr Busuttil said, explaining that the PN led opposition will be demanding all details of the power agreement to ensure the country will benefit from the deal. "It the Maltese people won't benefit, then I will not sign," Busuttil said.
Participating in the now regular Sunday interview, the Opposition leader condemned the Prime Minister's words of praise following the rescue operation near Lampedusa saying Malta only did its duty. The Lampedusa tragedy should be treated with dignity and not boasted about on the media. "The saving of lives is something to be proud of, however we simply did our duties, no need to boast about it", he said, explaining Malta's duties towards other people.
While the Prime Minister reiterated that the Gozo Channel issue was over, the Opposition will not refrain from talking about it, the PN leader pledged. "Threats of being in breach of parliamentary privilege will not silence us", Dr Busuttil said.
Referring to the selling of citizenship scheme and the appointment of blacklisted consultant Shiv Nair, Dr Busuttil said, "I seriously hope the due diligence on the scheme, would be much more rigorous than the background checks Mr Nair".
Dr Busuttil spoke about what he described as indirect taxes announced by the government last week. "It was the PN who informed citizens about this raise in taxation and not the camera adoring Prime minster and his cabinet. Instead they tried to hide the facts in cryptic press release not to loose face", Busuttil claimed.
Further more while €21 million will be deducted from this year's budget, €100 million more will be splashed on Muscat's 23 member cabinet. "While the government is paying the wife of the energy minister €13,000 monthly, medicines are out of stock and people are treated miserly", the opposition leader held. Referring to comments made by the Prime Minister regarding his employment as head of the MiC before Malta's EU accession, the PN leader said this couldn't be compared to Sai Mizzi's role. "I'm proud I helped my country to join the EU, how proud is Muscat of trying to keep the country out? An after all I'm no minister's husband", Busuttil insisted.
The Opposition leader concluded that the Oppositions interest lies with the country. "Good work will be acknowledged and we will be strong but constructive, especially on matters of national interest," he said
