Union walks out of Arriva management meeting
Relations deteriorate between Arriva transport company and General Workers Union
The General Workers Union announced it had walked out of a meeting with Arriva Malta management, claiming that manager Christine Camilleri demanded to know the outcome of a meeting between the union and Arriva employees.
The public transport operator, which has suffered millions in losses since the beginning of operations two years ago, is currently considering its future on the island.
"The GWU suspended all meetings scheduled for the day to give an Arriva meeting, which Christine Camilleri demanded as a matter of urgency, absolute priority," GWU transport secretary Jeremy Camilleri said.
"The meeting was held in the presence of workers' representatives, despite Arriva management's insistence not to have them attend, and it became clear that Arriva wanted to know what the union had discussed with its employees. The company also made false allegations of what was said during this meeting," Camilleri said.
Camilleri said that the company had given the union the impression that the meeting concerned the company's future operations.
"We are calling on all Arriva workers to stay united during this important period in the company's operations," Camilleri said.
