Seven-year-old girl seriously hurt in head-on collision

A 7-year-old girl from Birkirkara had been seriously injured in a head-on collision between a water bowser and a car at 9am this morning at Kappillan Mifsud Street in Hamrun. Fortunately enough, she was certified as not being in danger of dying.

Initial police investigations on site showed that the collision took place when an Vauxhall Astra vehicle driven by a 63-year-old Valletta resident which was driving from the direction of Villambrosa Road collided with the water bowser driven by a 34-year-old Mosta resident.

The 7-year-old girl from Birkirkara was a passenger on the Vauxhall Astra vehicle.

An ambulance was called on site and took the girl together with the Vauxhall driver to Mater Dei Hospital, where the driver was certified as suffering from slight injuries.

The police said it was still continuing with its investigations on this case.

I don't know if this child was wearing a seat belt, but I am constantly astonished and disgusted by the sight of children in cars in Malta wearing no seatbelts - often standing between the front seats. The adults are risking the childrens' lives and seem not to care at all for the childrens' safety. There should be a strong & shocking advertising campaign to educate such people and protect young lives, as well as a clampdown on offending adults, who should be given a hefty fine.
