Health Ministry found ‘€30 million debt’ on medicine
Godfrey Farrugia says previous administration failed to allocate enough budget for medicinal procurement during 2013.
While government requires around €90 million to purchase medicine, the previous administration allocated only €68 million for 2013, according to Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia.
Addressing parliament this morning during the parliamentary questions time, Farrugia said it was important for the health department to market health campaigns, but "the debt and overspending" found had not been encouraging.
Replying to questions raised by Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi, Farrugia said the ministry spent €41,099.63 in advertising and public relations between March, April and May.
Prompted by backbencher Anthony Agius Decelis, Farrugia went on to add that the ministry also found €32 million in pending payments for the procurement of medicines.
He said the amount had been brought forward year after year, when asked whether the debt had led to out-of-stock medicine.
Farrugia also said the Labour government embarked on a simplification of the procurement procedure and introduced a pay-per-use system.
