Three-day conference for Maltese ambassadors starts today

Foreign minister launches conference for diplomatic corps.

Foreign minister Tonio Borg today launched a three-day conference that brings together Malta’s 28 ambassadors who serve abroad.

This is the third conference of its sort to be held under Borg, in the form of meetings for Malta’s diplomatic corps to deliver updates on the country’s diplomatic efforts.

Borg paid tribute to the work carried out by the ambassadors which he said was reaping excellent results, among them the European Asylum Centre and the appointment of a Maltese deputy secretary-general to the Union of the Mediterranean.

This was coordinated by the justice ministry, under the direction of Permament Representative to the EU, Richard Cachia Caruana.

The foreign minister said Malta’s participation in international fora such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe were essential, as were Malta’s relations in the 5+5 group and the Union of the Mediterranean.

Tunisia, Italy and Libya are actively supporting Malta’s bid to host the heads of state meetings of 5+5 governments in 2011.
