SOS Malta renews call for donations in aid of typhoon-stricken-Philippines
Representative concedes that situation is still desperate with remote villages receiving aid once a week
"A collapsed bridge, school in rubbles, fields of the decapitated trees is the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan," Celine Cervi SOS Malta's representative in the Philippines described the current situation in a small town in stricken Philippines.
With international aid gathering pace in the worst affected areas by the deadly typhoon, houses in Tacloban are receiving relief goods while aid in neighbouring villages is still trickling in with families receiving aid just once a week.
Among the international aid is SOS Malta who has been assisting the tragedy-struck Philippines during the past weeks, but have lamented that the situation is still desperate.
"Families in Tacloban are receiving goods every day but families in neighbouring Burauen Leyte are only receiving one bag with two kilos of rice, a few candles, some noodles and a few cans of sardines every week."
The death toll has spiralled up to over 3600, with thousands injured and scores unaccounted for. Risks of diseases have prompted many to fear an increase in the death toll.
Despite widespread aid efforts, much more aid is need with health experts warning that the worst affected areas risk spreading infectious diseases.
Consequently, SOS Malta has refreshed calls for donations. Donations may be processed online at SOS Malta website or through one's respective bank.
