Liquigas advises consumers to check cylinders before use

Company offers to replace any faulty cylinders

Following its announcement that some LPG cylinders have been filled illegally, and in an unregulated way, Liquigas Malta is advising consumers to check LPG cylinder seals before use.

Liquigas Malta's genuine seals have an injection point on top, between the words 'Liquigas' and 'Malta' and a square profile rim.

Liquigas is offering to replace any of its yellow and green cylinders, which are still unused and which have a fake seal.

''As everyone can surely understand, this is not our responsibility and we are ourselves victims of fraud in this case," explained  Roberto Capelluto, Liquigas Malta Chief Executive Officer.

"Some of our own cylinders appear to have been filled by third parties before being placed on the market," he said.

''In any case, safety and service remain a Liquigas priority and we have also informed the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) of this measure," Capelluto said.

Liquigas is prepared to pick up unused cylinders with fake seals from homes and businesses and to replace them with regular, and properly filled, Liquigas cylinders at no additional cost.

For further details and assistance consumers may contact Liquigas Call Centre which is available 24/7, on telephone number 2165 1661/5 or the MCCAA on telephone number 2395 2000.

So who would shoulder responsibility if one of these "fakes" causes harm? Are Liquigas shedding theirs? Is it possible that it is not known who is this culprit? Simple math would suggest that it is someone who has quite a large stock of gas. No?

What measures are the MCCAA and the MRA taking to ensure that all distributors are only supply LPG ctlinders with official seals ?As once more it falls incumbent upon the consumer to be their own safety officer and protector. How many LPG cylinders it is enviagd have fake seals and what about those who have already opened such cylinders with fake seals.Who are the distributors concerned and what areas do they sell their wares in?Consumer protection -your are having a laugh -and what is the Consumer Affairs Minister(apparently we have one) saying about this?

Were we not told once that the wide-awake, fully balled MRA had its own full-bodied inspectors whisking around Malta (like miniature James Bonds) with a certified correct scale weighing up all options, (eh sorry there, I got confused), weighing up cylinder samples off distributors trucks? Were any defective samples ever discovered? If yes, what action was taken to safeguard the consumer. If there would be an accident, and the insurance would not pay up, as it would be discovered that it was caused by a defective cylinder, WHO WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE? Wakey, wakey!
