Updated | Planned protest march for the environment postponed

A protest march led by various local environmental NGOs was due to take place this morning in Valletta but has now been postponed.

A protest march for the environment scheduled today has been postponed, Din l-Art Helwa president Simone Mizzi said.

A cluster of environmentalists and representatives from various NGOs were to gather in Republic Street, Valletta in a protest march for the environment.

The protest was scheduled to start at 10.30am, headed by NGOs such as Din l-Art Ħelwa, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, Friends of the Earth, Birdlife Malta and Moviment Graffiti amongst others.

It is believed that the march was postponed due to the bad weather conditions.

Themed under the logo 'For our children and their children's children', the march was planned as a protest against what the environmentalists perceive as a culture of overdevelopment in Malta, with little consideration being given to the environment by the relevant authorities.

The controversial granting of a permit by MEPA for the redevelopment of a mega complex on Mistra ridge at the end of October, proved to be the catalyst for the protest.

In fact, the rally was announced in an NGO-organised press conference soon after that granting.

"Join the protest against the destruction of our landscapes, over-development, air pollution, new MEPA laws against residents, and the lack of enforcement against abuse," a statement on the Facebook event reads.

"We want Government commitment to save our environment - it's our health and our right.  We demand positive action," it continues.

Bendu, unfortunately it seems we are stuck with the parliament in spite of our record 1,200 objections and a protest in 2010. We can only hope that since the theatre has not been built upon, it may one day rise from its ashes! The fish farms is another very worrying issue that I hope the marine life NGOs will take up actively, as they are a hazard to the marine life of our bays, as well as a dangerous source of pollution - just ask doctors in the south about the serious swimmers' infections that they were having to treat.

Bendu, Sliema and Paceville were ruined in the 70s or 80s when most of us were either children or struggling to survive Mintoff's University 'reforms'. At least we have managed to save some of what is left, like Villa Bonici garden, the Art Nouveau houses, etc. What exactly have you contributed? Mariah, the ENGOs were all for going ahead this morning, until the photos of the photos of the floods were posted. At that point we realised that it would be irresponsible to encourage people to face such hazards. This in itself is the result of lack of planning over the last decades, allowing over-development and soil-sealing all over Malta and Gozo.

Environmentalists are not usually afraid of rain and consider it a blessing. Thus the protest should be held under umbrellas, raincoats, faldettas, caps etc. Environmentalists habitually consider it a pleasure to be part of nature. Take Greenpeace, for example...

The protest's logo seems to leave out some children: "For our children and their children's children" leaves out "for our children's children" but includes "their children's children" and skips a generation. Thus the logo should perhaps be: For our children, their children and their children's children" not to leave out anyone in the near future. Just a typing mistake, I suppose.
