Updated | Michael Parnis ends 35-year trade union career
The General Workers Union deputy secretary-general Michael Parnis calls it a day after a long career in trade unionism.
Michael Parnis has called a day on his 35-year career in trade unionism to take up a Human Resources post at a government department MaltaToday has learnt.
The union's deputy secretary-general tendered his resignation and in a letter sent to GWU boss Tony Zarb, Parnis said he was "honoured to have served in Malta's largest union."
Zarb thanked Parnis for his efforts and for the loyalty he always showed to the workers' cause. He also expressed his conviction that Parnis will make good use of his experience in his personal career.
The union's central administration and all GWU sections thanked Parnis for his services and wished him well.
Parnis commenced his activism in 1979 as a shop steward at the union's birthplace, the Malta Drydocks. He sat on the union's council since 1983 and he has been deputy secretary general for 14 years.
