AD – ‘Do not destroy our green lungs’

Green Party joins environmental NGOs in appeal to save Villa Mekrech

Alternattiva Demokratika today joined environmental NGOs in the appeal to save Villa Mechrech and its 18th-19th century gardens from destruction.

Prof. Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson, said: "Following its disastrous and illegal decision on the Mistra project, MEPA has to be really careful in its decisions. Allowing the destruction of this green lung in the South of Malta would verge on insanity.

"Malta is under the serious attack of the construction lobby and a few irresponsible politicians, today led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who are proposing all sorts of unsustainable schemes - such as unlimited heights for four/five star hotels, over 10-storey high-rises in various parts of Malta, and Sliema being condemned to perpetual shade through the raised 10-storey limit - to appease the building lobby that financed the Labour campaign.

"Changing from PN to PL has not changed anything: the greed of these politicians and their cronies, who are ready to sacrifice what little space there is left in Malta to further their egoistic political ambitions, is always there."
