Government doubles fee for film classification procedure
Budget 2014 increases fee from €46.59 to €100 per film.
While the government has claimed it wanted to help cinema operators in Malta, it has now doubled the fees for film examinations, the Opposition's spokesperson for culture Francis Zammit Dimech said.
"This is a new tax which government conveniently hid in the Budget it has just presented," he said.
The legal notice amends the fees for the age-classification of films, which levies €5 per film trailer and €100 per film. The fees include the issuing of the age-classification certificate provided for in the Cinema and Stage Age-Classification.
The MP said that new regulations which came into force through a legal notice published in the government gazette, have doubled the fee for every film (reel) examination to €100.
Zammit Dimech said it was telling that no media conference was held to announce the tariff change.
"While the government published the regulations in the government gazette, as it is obliged to do by law, it however chose not to organise any media conferences or issue press statements," he said.
The MP said the government wanted to hide its decision to double the fee on film reels examinations.
"In other words, the government has introduced a new tax for cinema operators," he said.
