Sant calls for MEPs to dispel starry-eyed approach in favour of government’s interests
Labour MEP calls on Maltese representatives to dedicate their work to Malta’s best interests.
Former Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Alfred Sant has called on Malta's representatives in the European parliament to "step back from the naïve, starry-eyed approach and dedicate themselves to Malta's interests."
"Given that Malta is the smallest state in the Union, it is fundamental for the MEPs to support the Maltese government in its future endeavours to get the right deal for Malta on all fronts."
Addressing a social activity in Qawra, the Labour MEP candidate underlined that the Maltese MEPs should dedicate their work and their efforts to Malta's and the government's interests.
"Rather than adopting an inexperienced attitude, the Maltese representatives must dedicate themselves to a clear-sighted vision of where Malta 's interests lie to face the challenges that will arise."
Sant argued that after the MEP elections in may 2014, the European parliament will be polarised as never before, consequently creating strong controversies and controversies between those on the opposing sides of the political spectrum.
"There will be disputes between those on the extreme right and those at the centre of the political spectrum. There will be deep controversies between those who wish to create a federal Europe and those who want to retain national sovereignty."
