Sliema councilor opposes 'frivolous' Pentecostal church activity
Sliema councilor Yves (Bobby) Calì has opposed an activity organised by the Pentecostal church group World of Life, and is planning on raising the 'frivolous' permission at council level.
MaltaToday is informed of opposition raised by Calì at a children's activity with Sliema local councillors, in a series of emails between the councillors discussing the permit. In comments to MaltaToday, Calì said he was opposed to the activity taking place on Sliema's promenade “because of serious personal reservations which need to be discussed at council level.”
The activity is due to be held at Ghar id-Dud on August 13 and 14, by the Pentecostal group World of Life. The activity will involve a puppet show on episodes from the bible for children, with singing and dancing activities.
In response to the request for permission, Calì said in an email to Sliema councillors: “I object; these people are undermining our Catholic beliefs.” On a separate occasion he also cited that the repercussions of the activity are “very serious.”
In the email seen by MaltaToday, Sliema councillor Cyrus Engerer replied to the email, saying: “We are not all Catholic... if your ‘our Catholic belief’ meant the Local Council’s, you are wrong because I am not Catholic either.”
A single objection to the permission of the activity is not sufficient to prohibit permission. The activity must be objected by the majority of Sliema councillors.
