Opposition leader must answer for ‘biggest political scandal’ – PL
Labour says Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil must answer for the oil scandal.
Opposition leader Simon Busuttil had "a lot to answer for" on the oil corruption scandal, the Labour Party said today.
Reacting to this morning's revelations in court, the Labour Party said emails presented in court have revealed that oil trader George Farrugia knew both former transport minister Austin Gatt and then Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, despite the two having denied knowing him.
The PL said that Farrugia not only knew Gatt but was aware of his opinions and relations with companies, competitors of Farrugia.
"Undoubtedly, there are several individuals who have to shoulder responsibility for what happened. As leader of the Nationalist Party, Simon Busuttil must shoulder the responsibility," the PL said.
"The taxpayers have the right to know how taxpayers' money was used to pay commissions."
Former transport minister Austin Gatt filed a defamation suit against Balzan for MaltaToday's reports on the scale of corruption inside Enemalta, which led to corruption charges filed against former Enemalta chairman Tancred Tabone and former consultant Frank Sammut. MaltaToday broke the story that Sammut had been paid commissions by commodities giant Trafigura through an offshore account, for the supply of oil to the state energy corporation Enemalta.
