AD slams Busuttil’s proposed gay adoption impact assessment test
Green Party insists sexual orientation should not play a part in adoption rights
"Simon Busuttil's proposal for the government to conduct a social impact assessment test prior to introducing the right for gay couples to adopt fuels discrimination against gay couples," the Green party said.
"The assessment test would be reaffirming discrimination based on sexual orientation. Adoptive parents should be judged on their ability rather than on their sexual orientation," Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) Chairman Arnold Cassola said.
Last week, PN Leader Simon Busuttil called on the government to seek a social impact assessment test prior to legalising adoption for gay couples.
"The government should not rush but conversely, it ought to conduct a social impact study to analyse the impact of gay adoption in Malta," Busuttil argued.
Meanwhile, AD stressed that parents' sexual orientation should not play a role in gay couples' right to adopt.
"Gay couples should not be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation, regardless of whether they are potentially good parents or not," Angele Deguara, AD representative on the LGBT Consultative Council, said.
Deguara also called for the Opposition and the government not to let stereotypes and prejudice reign over social justice.
