The Nationalist Party should clarify its relationship with George Farrugia in the past years, the Labour Party said in a statement.

It said that declarations made by state witness George Farrugia during a PAC meeting revealed that he made several donations to the party, including a sponsorship of €2,000 to former Minister Austin Gatt’s electoral campaign.

“Apart from regular meetings with PN representatives, Farrugia was also a PN benefactor. This surely raises questions that the PN has to answer. Simon Busuttil needs to shoulder responsibility; it is not acceptable to say that the Opposition paid for its mistakes through March’s general election,” Labour said in a statement.

The €2,000 donation was made prior to the 2008 general elections. During Monday’s PAC meeting, Farrugia underlined that the donation was made on behalf of John’s Group, owned by the Farrugia brothers.

He stated that it had been his brother Ray Farrugia who had asked him to go with the money. George Farrugia admitted meeting Austin Gatt in his office, but according to him he was simply accompanying his brother and never discussed oil-related issues.
